The University of Maine at Presque Isle and the University of Maine School of Law are partnering to host a Law Day event on Thursday, March 5 from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Campus Center, providing information for students and community members who are interested in attending law school and pursuing careers in law. This event is free and open to the public.
“Whether you are nearing graduation and thinking about attending law school or just starting your college journey and considering our 3+3 transfer agreement with the University of Maine School of Law, we look forward to welcoming people throughout the community to this dynamic program,” UMPI President Ray Rice said. “It will be an interactive set of presentations and sessions where attendees can learn all about law school, employment in our legal profession here in Aroostook County and far beyond, and even talk with several local attorneys about their experiences.”
The day’s agenda includes a presentation by Maine Law Interim Dean Dmitry Bam, several breakout sessions, and a panel featuring four local attorneys—Assistant District Attorney Kari Wells-Puckett and several attorneys in private practice, including Adam Swanson, Scott Hunter, and Dan Umphrey. Lunch will be included as part of the programming.
Participants will also have a chance to learn more about the 3+3 law degree program available at UMPI through an agreement with Maine Law. The Accelerated Law Pathway saves students significant time and money: they save a year of undergraduate tuition and complete both a Bachelor’s degree and Juris Doctor (J.D.) law degree in six years instead of seven.
“We are excited to share the dynamic opportunities that a law degree can bring and illustrate how deeply law impacts our everyday lives and how important law is to our communities,” Carrie Wilshusen, Associate Dean for Admissions at Maine Law, said. “We invite both those interested in studying law, and those curious about work in the legal field.”
Law Day is just one of the many Program Days available through UMPI’s Admissions Office where high school students can visit campus and learn about academic programs and career fields that interest them. The Law Day is unique in that it is open to anyone of any age interested in pursuing a career in law.
“We will be spotlighting the 3+3 Law Program at our next Program Day on March 5th to raise awareness to current UMPI students, area high school Juniors and Seniors, Adult Education students and anyone else interested in learning more about the possibility of Law School,” UMPI Admissions Director Sue White said. “These interactive program days allow prospective students to really explore and ask questions about the program they are interested in. We are especially excited about Thursday’s event as we will be working collaboratively with UMPI, the University of Maine School of Law and area attorneys to expose people to the real possibility of attending law school and the opportunity to return to the area to practice law. It’s a win-win for everyone involved. Prospective students will see first-hand the partnership that is in place that will help them make the transition from UMPI to the Law School and that peace of mind we hope will encourage them to consider this amazing opportunity.”
