Andrew B. Benson ’88 has been confirmed by the U.S. Senate as United States Attorney for the District of Maine.
A veteran prosecutor with more than three decades of legal experience, Benson began his career in a district attorney’s office in central Maine, trying serious and violent felony cases. In 1999, he was appointed one of three senior homicide prosecutors in the Maine Attorney General’s Office by then-Attorney General Andrew Ketterer. During his 15 years with the office, Benson oversaw and tried homicide cases throughout the state and worked on more than 100 murder and manslaughter cases.
Benson’s nomination was confirmed on May 18 after he had served in the role on an interim basis since October 2025, following his appointment by Attorney General Pamela Bondi pending Senate confirmation.
A lifelong Mainer, Benson was born in western Maine and grew up in Bethel, where he attended local schools. He earned an honors degree in German literature from the University of Maine before enrolling at Maine Law, where he received his J.D. in 1988.
In 2014, Benson was nominated to the Maine District Court by Governor Paul LePage. He was renominated by Governor Janet Mills in 2021 and confirmed by the Maine Senate following both nominations. During his time on the bench, he presided over hundreds of trials, including dozens of serious criminal jury trials, before resigning to accept the appointment as U.S. attorney.
As United States Attorney for the District of Maine, Benson leads the federal prosecutor’s office for the state, with offices in Portland and Bangor.
