After long consideration, we have made the determination that we are unable to host the PLUS program for the summer of 2023. We look forward to PLUS 2024!

Eligibility to Apply

This program is targeted, but not restricted, to college students from racial and ethnic minority groups who are underrepresented in the legal profession (e.g. African American/Black, Latino/Hispanic, American Indian/Alaskan Native). In addition, individuals who are from rural communities or are the first in their family to attend college will be given preferred consideration.

Maine Law PLUS program admissions are based on your completed file, which must contain the following items:

  • Completed application form
  • Personal Statement
  • Resume
  • Transcript(s)
  • Letter of recommendation (minimum one, maximum three letters)

It is the responsibility of the applicant to make sure his/her application file is complete. We will make every effort to notify applicants, via the email listed on the application, when their application file is complete. Notification of acceptance to the program will be sent via the email provided on the application.

Personal Statement

Please explain, briefly (a paragraph will suffice), why you are interested in this program.

Character and Fitness Addendum

If you answer “yes” to any question in the Character and Fitness questions, applicants must also submit a Character and Fitness addendum explaining the circumstance. An application will not be considered until the addendum is submitted. The Character and Fitness Statement is a key part of all law school applications. A “yes” answer does not necessarily preclude acceptance to the program. Your honest answer to the question is the greater criteria.

Optional Statement

If you are outside the parameters of the grant program as indicated in the “Eligibility to Apply” section above, please include an optional statement explaining why you would benefit from this program.

Please provide a detailed resume that includes any scholastic honors and awards that you have received. Also, please highlight your community service and extracurricular experiences. The resume should not exceed two typed pages.

Please provide a copy of your current undergraduate transcript(s). Both official and unofficial transcripts are acceptable.

Letters of Recommendation

Please provide at least one (no more than three) letter(s) of recommendation from people who know you well enough to assess your academic capabilities (such as a teacher, mentor, employer).

The letters or recommendation forms should be addressed to Maine Law PLUS Program Admissions, and may be submitted in the following ways:

  • with your application packet in a signed and sealed envelope
  • directly by the recommender to
  • directly by the recommender to the mailing address listed below

Promptly notify the Maine Law PLUS Program Admissions Office of any change in your information as well as any new facts that may change the response on any part of your application.

Communications About Your File

Under the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, we will share information about the status of your application file only with you, the applicant. It is advisable to designate an individual, typically a parent, partner, sibling, or spouse, to communicate on your behalf with the law school if you expect to be out of the country or otherwise unavailable during the application process. To do so, please send a letter to the Admissions Office authorizing and naming your designate to work with our office on your behalf.
