Applicants whose native language is not English and who received an undergraduate degree from an institution in which English was not the primary language of instruction must demonstrate English proficiency in one of the following ways:

  • Submission of adequate test scores from a standardized English proficiency exam, including:
    1. TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of 550 or above (paper), 79 or above (internet-based), or 213 or above (computer-based); or
    2. IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of 6.5 or higher.
  • For the JD Program only: Submission of a score on the LSAT (Law School Admission Test) that demonstrates proficiency as determined by the Admissions Committee. 
  • For the LLM and JSD Programs only: Submission of a writing sample for review by the Graduate Programs Director and/or Graduate Admissions Committee as well as completion of an in-person or videoconference interview with the Graduate Programs Director or other Graduate Admissions Committee member. This option will be utilized only in exceptional circumstances.
