The Center for Law + Innovation connects students to opportunities in information privacy law, cybersecurity law, and AI law. Courses and career opportunities offered by the Center include:

  • Certificate in Information Privacy Law: Students earn the Certificate in Information Privacy Law through a combination of experiential learning, coursework (including the Information Privacy Summer Institute), a writing project on a privacy-related topic, and certification from the IAPP. Graduates who earn the Certificate become part of Maine Law’s extensive alumni network of privacy and data professionals.
  • Information Privacy Summer Institute: Every summer, the Center offers a distinctive selection of privacy-related courses led by esteemed scholars and practitioners. The curriculum often features Global Privacy Law along with three other courses addressing current issues in the field. These courses are typically available to both J.D. students and practicing professionals.
  • Privacy in Practice Conference: The Center hosts a one-day Privacy in Practice Conference, traditionally held on the final day of in-person programming at the Summer Information Privacy Institute. Previous themes have explored U.S. state privacy laws, cybersecurity law, AI ethics, big data, in-house privacy lawyering, and more.
  • Externships: The Center has helped develop a series of externships and internships in privacy and related fields at a variety of businesses and organizations.
  • Student Opportunities: The Center offers numerous opportunities for students to enhance their expertise and expand their networks in privacy, cybersecurity, and AI law. These opportunities include participation in Maine Law’s Student Journal of Information Privacy Law, involvement with our Helsinki Information Law Moot Court team, and engagement with our student organization, Maine Law Information Privacy Association. Additionally, the Center supports travel to privacy-related conferences and events and provides financial awards to incoming students.
