Maine Law’s Chris Northrop Honored with 2026 Maine Justice Foundation Downing Award

Chris Northrop, Emeritus Professor of Law and Director of the Rural Practice Clinic (RPC) in Fort Kent, awarded the 2026 recipient of the Downing Award from the Maine Justice Foundation on January 28.

The Downing Award recognizes legal aid staff whose work reflects an extraordinary commitment to expanding access to justice for vulnerable and low-income Mainers. The award was established by the family of Thomas P. Downing, Jr. after his untimely death in 1985. Downing was one of the first attorneys to serve at Pine Tree Legal Assistance and is remembered for his dedication to serving those most in need.

Northrop’s selection reflects a career defined by public service and a deep commitment to rural communities. Since “retiring” in 2024 as full-time faculty, he has continued his work in a new capacity, overseeing Maine Law’s RPC. Under his leadership, the clinic has experienced remarkable growth and continued success, strengthening legal services in underserved parts of the state while training the next generation of practice-ready lawyers.

“Chris embodies the very best of what clinical legal education can be,” said Courtney Beer, Director of Clinics at Maine Law. “His leadership of the Rural Practice Clinic has expanded meaningful access to justice in communities that are too often overlooked, while also mentoring students with extraordinary care and intention. This recognition reflects not only his lifelong commitment to public service, but the real and lasting impact he continues to have on clients and future lawyers alike.”

The RPC plays a critical role in Maine Law’s experiential learning program, providing students with hands-on opportunities to serve real clients while addressing access-to-justice gaps in rural Maine. Northrop’s mentorship and guidance have helped shape the clinic into a vital bridge between legal education and community need. His recognition underscores Maine Law’s ongoing commitment to public service, experiential education, and ensuring that high-quality legal representation is available to all Mainers, regardless of geography or income.
