Where to go in an Emergency
When there is an emergency, there are two immediate options for protecting life and well-being. The first is “Evacuation” and the second is “Shelter in Place.”
Evacuation
“Evacuation” means leaving the location of the hazard. This may involve exiting a room or building, or leaving campus, depending on the nature of the emergency. Students are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the evacuation plan posted in each classroom.
In the event of an emergency, these procedures should be followed when evacuating the building. Be aware of all the marked exits from your area and building. An emergency evacuation plan showing the building floor plan and how to get out is posted in all occupied spaces.
- Remain calm.
- Close doors and windows in your area as you exit, if safe to do so.
- Assist those with special needs to areas of refuge (i.e. stairwell landings) and close the fire door. Ask for their name.
- Walk quickly to the nearest marked exit and advise others to do the same. Do not use the elevators.
- Proceed to the designated regrouping area.
- Report the name and location of individuals waiting for assistance in Areas of refuge to Fire/Police/Security officials.
- Do not reenter the building.
- Keep all walkways and roadways clear for emergency vehicles.

In the event there is a need
to evacuate the building, please proceed to the Portland Regency Hotel & Spa parking lot.
Shelter in Place
“Shelter in Place” means going to and remaining in a building, away from the threat. The Shelter in Place notification could be used in situations such as a Hazardous materials spill near or on Campus, or an active shooter on campus.
If directed to shelter in place:
- If outdoors, go inside and into a room.
- Close and lock the door (if possible).
- Close and lock all windows.
- Stay out of window and door openings.
- Turn off fans/air conditioners.
- Remain calm and quiet.
- Do not unlock doors or windows and do not exit, until directed by a public safety officer or university official.
