  • 2024: Professor Monte Mills and Dr. Suzanne Greenlaw to discuss the topic of Landback and the Law.
  • 2023: Lenny Powell, Associate with Jenner & Block, delivered Maine Law’s Third Annual Indian Law and History Lecture. One of Powell’s main areas of practice is tribal law. He was part of the team that won a landmark 2023 Supreme Court case upholding tribal rights and the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA). He detailed the work and arguments that went into keeping ICWA in tact.
  • 2022: The lecture explored the Doctrine of Discovery, a millennia-old legal principle, which forms the foundation for Western property law and was first espoused by the Pope as justification for the Christian Crusades.
  • 2021: The First Annual Indian Law and History Lecture features Matthew L.M. Fletcher, Professor of Michigan State School of Law, and Sherri Mitchell, attorney, author, and Executive Director of the Land Peace Foundation. The lecture moderator is Donna Loring, author, broadcaster, and former Senior Advisor on Tribal Affairs to Governor Janet Mills.
