After long consideration, we have made the determination that we are unable to host the PLUS program for the summer of 2023. We look forward to PLUS 2024!


Who is eligible for this program?

This program is targeted, but not restricted, to college students from racial and ethnic minority groups who are underrepresented in the legal profession (e.g. African American/Black, Latino/Hispanic, American Indian/Alaskan Native). In addition, individuals who are from rural communities or are the first in their family to attend college will be given preferred consideration. The program is designed for students in the first two years of college.

What factors will be considered in the selection process?

The selection committee will make its decision based on a complete review of your application. The quality of your written personal statement, letters of recommendation and your overall academic record will be considered in the selection process. Selected students will be notified by email.

How long is the Maine Law PLUS Program?

The Maine Law PLUS Program is typically a three-week residency program.

Does the Maine Law PLUS Program cover the cost of my transportation to and from the summer program?

No. Students are required to make their own transportation arrangements, at their own expense, to attend the summer program on University of Maine School of Law campus in Portland, Maine.

Where will classes take place?

All classes take place at the University of Maine School of Law, 246 Deering Avenue, Portland, Maine

Do I have to attend all classes in the program?

This is a rigorous academic program and full attendance from all participants on each day is mandatory. Full participation is expected. If you do not demonstrate an active engagement throughout the three-week program, you may be asked to leave. You must complete all assignments on time, not be late for class and attend all off-campus activities.

How long are classes each day?

Typically, morning classes begin at 9:00 am and continue until lunchtime. Afternoon classes begin at 1:00 pm and continue until 4:30 pm, with some weekend and evening activities.

What is the stipend for and how much is it?

Each student in the program will receive a stipend of $750 to help defray lost summer earnings. Students must complete the program to receive the full stipend.

Does the Maine Law PLUS Program cover meals and housing expenses?

Yes. The Maine Law PLUS Program will provide meals and housing for participants.

Is on-campus parking available to participants; if so is there a fee for parking during the residency program?

On-campus parking will be available to participants at no cost during the residency program.

What if I have special dietary needs?

We urge you to advise the program committee of any special dietary needs you have at the time of your acceptance into the program. Every effort will be made to accommodate your request.

Will someone be available to assist me if I have any academic difficulty or personal concerns during the 3-week program?

Yes. You will find that the law faculty and instructors will be very helpful in your efforts to develop the skills for law school success. Questions or concerns also can be brought to the attention of the associate dean for admissions, who will be available daily during program times. In addition, each resident floor will have a law student resident assistant to address your concerns and guide your preparation of class assignments.
