Professor Zillman is currently on leave from Maine Law. He is serving as interim President of the University of Maine at Presque Isle.

Prior to coming to Maine Law, Professor Zillman served on the law faculties at Arizona State University and the University of Utah. At Utah, he was director of the School's Energy Law Center. In 1990 he was the Distinguished Visiting Professor of Law at the United States Military Academy. In Fall 2004, Professor Zillman was a Visiting Professor at the University of New Mexico Law School where he taught Energy Law and International Natural Resources Seminar.

Professor Zillman has written over 50 law review articles and served as author-editor on 10 books in his areas of expertise. Among the books are Energy Law and Policy for the 21st Century, (Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation), Maine Tort Law, (LexisNexis), Constitutional Law for the Citizen Soldier, Human Rights in Natural Resources Development (Oxford University Press), and Energy Security (Oxford University Press, May 2004) with co-editors Barry Barton, Anita Ronne, and Catherine Redgwell. He recently completed the 2004 Edition of Maine Tort Law with Jack Simmons and Jane Gregory, and is now completing work on a book-length study of the World War I Congress and the regulation of speech in wartime.

In May 2004, Professor Zillman presented the U.S. Chapter (with Michael Bigos, '03) at the Biennial International Meeting of the International Bar Association Section on Energy and Natural Resources Law in San Francisco. He has recently begun work on a new International Bar Association topic: New Models of Natural Resources Regulation. Professor Zillman presented the first findings at a conference in Toledo, Spain in May 2005 in connection with the meeting of the Spanish Energy Law Group.

Professor Zillman served as special assistant attorney general in Arizona. He served as independent counsel to the Maine House of Representatives to resolve election contests in 2000 and 2002. He chaired the Maine Legislative Reapportionment Commission in 2003.

Art, culture, athletics and dogs fill Professor Zillman's time outside the Law School. Don and Linda love collecting Maine art, primarily landscapes. A part of their summers are spent enjoying opera at Santa Fe Opera and Glimmerglass Opera in Cooperstown, N.Y. During the school year, Don tries to attend a good mixture of Portland's theatre, symphony and dance programs. For over 25 years, Professor Zillman has been an active distance runner. He has competed in races around the country and the world at distances from 5 kilometers to the Marathon. His faithful German shorthaired pointer, Matisse, is his regular training partner, and occasional race participant.
