Orlando Delogu to present 2018 Constitution Day Lecture at Maine Law

Professor Orlando DeloguOrlando Delogu, emeritus professor at the University of Maine School of Law, will present the annual Constitution Day Lecture at Maine Law on Monday, September 17, 2018.

The title of his lecture is “The U.S. and Maine’s Constitution Both Indicate that Maine’s Beaches are Public Property.” The lecture will take place from 12:10 pm to 1:10 pm in the Moot Courtroom at the Law School, 246 Deering Avenue in Portland. The event is free and open to the public.

Professor Orlando Delogu, one of the founders of the Maine Civil Liberties Union, has a long and distinguished record of teaching and public service. He has taught at Maine Law for over 50 years, and has been deeply involved in policy issues, from the local to the international level. In 2013, he was awarded the annual Justice Louis Scolnik Award by the ACLU of Maine (formerly the Maine Civil Liberties Union). The award honors members of the legal community for their commitment to protecting civil liberties.

At Maine Law, Professor Delogu taught Property Law, as well as courses on land use, environmental, administrative, state-local government law, and medical-legal law. He taught legal process and constitutional law to graduate students in the Muskie School of Public Service at the University of Southern Maine. He also taught at law schools in Ireland, England, and France. He is a prolific writer who has published dozens of law review articles, books, and newspaper columns in the areas of land use, environmental law, and state and local tax policy.

In the realm of public service, Professor Delogu has been a member and chair of the Portland Planning Board; member of the Portland City Council; member on Maine’s Board of Environmental Protection; and chair of the Association of American Law Schools’ Environmental Law Section. He has consulted on environmental issues in Germany and Thailand, at the request of the U.S. State Department.
