Fund Descriptions

Scholarships

American College of Trial Lawyers (ACTL) Trial Advocacy Fund
Established: 1998
Purpose: To provide scholarship assistance to incoming third-year students at the Univ. of Maine School of Law engaged in trial-related activities and trial advocacy.

Kenneth and Marjorie C. Baird Scholarship Fund
Established: 1966
Purpose: To provide scholarships to married second or third year law students who possess strong academic qualifications, show promise for excellence in their pursuit of legal education, and demonstrate financial need.

Laurie L. Balmuth Scholarship Fund
Established: 2004
Purpose: To provide financial aid to non-traditional, innovative law students who show great promise in their pursuit of legal education and who demonstrate financial need.

Israel and Sumner Bernstein Memorial Scholarship Fund
Established: 1967
Purpose: To provide scholarship assistance to a student who has successfully completed the first year of study Maine Law, has high academic distinction and demonstrated financial need.

William Bingham Scholarship Fund
Established: 2001
Purpose: Provides a half-tuition scholarship to an incoming 1L student who is a Maine resident, has strong academic qualifications, and demonstrates financial need. Recipients are to be known as Bingham Scholars. The fund can also be used to offer recruitment scholarships to other admitted applicants.

Class of 1971 Memorial Scholarship Fund
Established: 1996
Purpose: To recognize incoming second or third year law students with demonstrated financial need who have made a notable contribution to the Law School community.

Class of 1979 David D. Gregory Scholarship Fund
Established: 2005
Purpose: This fund honors Professor Gregory’s service to the legal profession and the University of Maine School of Law as a civil rights attorney, a special court master, legal scholar, and exceptional teacher. In keeping with Professor Gregory’s rigorous and high standards for intellectual achievement, scholarship awards in his name will be made to second and third year students based on academic need and outstanding scholastic achievement.

Philip M. Dusini Scholarship Fund
Established: 2007
Purpose: The Fund was established with gifts from Philip’s spouse, Dollie E. Ash, to provide scholarship assistance to Maine Law students with demonstrated financial need.

Elliott Family Scholarship Fund
Established: 2002
Purpose: Ensures that second and third year students with outstanding academic credentials will be able to continue to attend the Law School.

Richard H. Fay ‘64 Memorial Scholarship Fund
Established: 1994
Purpose: Scholarship assistance to law students with demonstrated financial need and academic motivation.

Foundation Scholarship Fund
Established: 2005
Purpose: Financial aid and scholarship assistance for Law School students who possess strong academic qualifications, show promise for excellence in their pursuit of legal education and/or demonstrate financial need.

Justice Harry P. Glassman Memorial Scholarship Fund
Established: 1981
Purpose: Provides scholarship assistance for students who demonstrate financial need and academic motivation.

Morris and Sylvia Greenberg Scholarship Fund
Established: 1995
Purpose: This fund honors the late Morris Greenberg who practiced law in Portland for over 55 years, and is given to students who have resided in Maine for at least five years, and who demonstrate financial need and academic promise.

Pierce B. Hasler and Arlana K. Hasler Memorial Fund
Established: 1972
Purpose: Provides financial assistance in the form of a loan or scholarship to students who are scholastically motivated and demonstrate financial need.

Horace S. Libby Memorial Scholarship Fund
Established: 1989
Purpose: Provides scholarship and fellowship assistance to students who intend to pursue a career devoted to the public interest.

Governor James B. and Catherine Longley Memorial Scholarship Fund
Established: 1966
Purpose: Provides scholarship or loan assistance to Maine residents who live within commuting distance of the Law School, for whom a legal education would seem impractical if they could not live at home and receive scholarship aid.

Macdonald Family Scholarship Fund
Established: 2008
Purpose: To provide scholarship assistance to Maine Law students with demonstrated financial need, who are married with children or single parents.

David Santee Miller Memorial Scholarship Fund
Established: 1987
Purpose: Provides scholarship assistance to students with academic promise and financial need who intend to pursue a career devoted to the public interest.

New Hampshire Alumni/ae Scholarship Fund
Established: 2004
Purpose: To support New Hampshire residents attending Maine Law who possess strong academic qualifications, show promise for excellence in their pursuit of legal education, and demonstrate financial need.

Osher Scholarship Fund
Established: 2005
Purpose: To support students who are residents of the state of Maine and who possess strong academic qualifications, show promise for excellence in their pursuit of legal education and demonstrate financial need.

Pierce Atwood Scholarship Fund
Established: 2004
Purpose: To provide scholarship assistance to students who possess strong academic qualifications, show promise for excellence in their pursuit of legal education, and demonstrate financial need.

Justice Harold J. Rubin Scholarship Fund
Established: 1995
Purpose: Provides scholarship assistance to a 3L student who intends to practice in the trial advocacy area and who shows skill, interest and commitment to trial practice.

Justice Abraham M. Rudman Scholarship Fund
Established: 1971
Purpose: Provides scholarship assistance to a law student from the State of Maine who demonstrates academic promise and financial need.

Charles W. Smith Memorial Fund
Established: 1983
Purpose: Provides scholarship assistance to a law student who demonstrates academic promise and financial need.

TD Banknorth Scholarship Fund
Established: 2002
Purpose: To support students who are residents of the state of Maine and who possess strong academic qualifications, show promise for excellence in their pursuit of legal education and demonstrate financial need.

Thompson Fund Scholarship
Purpose: Provides scholarship assistance to students with interest and achievement in the area of marine law.

Vafiades Northern Lights Scholarship Fund
Established: 2002
Purpose: To provide full tuition scholarships to law students who are Maine and Eastern Maine residents who possess solid academic qualifications, show promise for excellence in their pursuit of legal education, and show a demonstrated financial need.

Violette/Lombard Scholarship Fund
Established: 1992
Purpose: Provides scholarship assistance to law students who demonstrate academic promise and financial need.

Betsy and Peter Wiley Scholarship Fund
Established: 2006
Purpose: To provide scholarship assistance to law students who are single parents with demonstrated financial need.

Woodcock Family Scholarship Fund
Established: 2004
Purpose: To provide scholarships to students who are residents of Penobscot County, Maine or graduates of Bowdoin College who possess strong academic qualifications, show promise for excellence in their pursuit of legal education, and demonstrate financial need.

Fellowships

Bride Family Fund for Business, Entrepreneurship and the Law
Established: 2006
Purpose: The Fund provides a summer internship which will assist law students who plan to enter a non-traditional legal career in business, and for programs not relating to the practice of law per se that encourage students to use their talents in ways that make a significant contribution to the economic growth in Maine.

Charles A. Harvey Fellowship Fund
Established: 2009
Purpose: To support trial advocacy education and in particular to support a summer fellowship involving a trial practice immersion experience for a selected Maine law student, including a stipend and related program expenses.

Vincent McKusick Fellowship Fund
Established: 2007
Purpose: The Fund is designed to provide tuition and other support to incoming students from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds, with a goal of increasing the diversity of the student body at the Law School and within the legal community in the State of Maine.

Roger A. Putnam Fellowship Fund
Established: 2012
Purpose: The purpose of this Fund is to support an annual paid summer internship for a law student at the Cumberland Legal Aid Clinic.

Other Funds

Coffin Fund for Public Service
Established: 2002
Purpose: The Coffin Fund will be used to enhance the Law School’s commitment to public service through the development of programs, curricular offerings and scholarly activity that will highlight the important intersection of law and public service.

Catherine Lee Justice for Women Lecture Fund
Established: 2011
Purpose: This Fund enables the Law School to host a distinguished speaker annually. Speakers will be invited to present a public lecture which will focus primarily on issues related to justice for women and girls in the developing world.
