Student attorneys in the Refugee and Human Rights Clinic (RHRC) created the following series of videos based on the curriculum presented through the monthly pro se asylum trainings. By providing these videos and conducting additional outreach throughout Maine, the RHRC hopes to expand its reach to hundreds of additional asylum seekers.

Introduction to Filing

The first video in the series walks the applicant through the basic requirements for asylum and an overview of the affirmative asylum process.

I-589

The second video in the series walks the applicant through how to complete the Form I-589 (the application for asylum).

Personal Declaration

The third video in the series walks the applicant through best practices and tips for drafting the personal declaration. (This is the applicant’s story summarizing the harm they faced and the harm they fear and why they suffered that harm.)

Gathering Supporting Evidence

The fourth video in the series walks the applicant through evidence they might gather to help support the asylum case.

Filing your I-589

The last video in the series walks the applicant through how to compile and file the asylum case with the Department of Homeland Security.
