Domestic Violence Program
All Student Attorneys enrolled in the Cumberland Legal Aid Clinic courses also participate in the Domestic Violence Program. CLAC students represent victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking in protection from abuse proceedings in Lewiston District Court. This program provides critically needed legal services to more than 200 clients annually, by helping adults and children find safety and economic security, and escape from abusive relationships and dangerous living situations by assisting with obtaining protection from abuse orders. Students receive training in the civil remedies available to victims of domestic violence, as well as the dynamics of family violence. Through their work with individual victims in court, students develop skills in negotiations and evidentiary trials.
